W1P Studios is a value driven brand - what does that mean?
Having a certain set of values and fashion seem like two contradictory subjects that don’t work together at all. For many people fashion only resembles a consumable product: something you need, maybe also enjoy, but in the end you will mostly throw it away. So how can the consumption of fashion work together with high standard of moral and ethical values?
To explain our belief that fashion and certain values can go hand in hand after all, we, the founders of W1P Studios, want to take a step back to our roots and tell you a little bit more about how we came together as a team and our journey building this brand.
We met each other during our fashion design studies in Germany, working together as team partners in one course module. During that project, we quickly recognized that we love the same features about fashion, but also struggled with a lot of the same issues within the fashion industry. May it be the topic of sustainability and the ongoing greenwashing in the industry, the working conditions of the garment workers or also the debate regarding societal norms connecting “appropriate” clothing and gender stereotypes.
When discussing these topics and so many more, we recognized that we were unhappy about the status quo of the fashion industry and discovered that all of us wished for a change, both in the industry, but also in the consumer’s mindset.
So, we started to design our very first collection together and chose the topic of toxic masculinity, how to deconstruct it and make space for more vulnerability as well as honesty within certain gender stereotypes. Alongside that we wanted to work as sustainable as possible, since this is a value close to our hearts and we recognized that in order to be able to work in the fashion industry nowadays, especially with the climate crisis in mind, there is a necessity and urgency for it. Thus, we searched for deadstock and secondhand materials that we could reuse, we questioned the fibres of the material and tried to produce our collection with a minimum amount of trash.
To design and produce a collection which is not only considered beautiful, but also more sustainable and has a strong message, fulfilled us a lot. This was a remarkable turning point for us, as we realised that it is possible to create a value driven fashion collection indeed. Moreover, we realised how well we have worked together as a team, thus it was the starting point of us considering and pursuing the idea of working together as a team in the long term. As a result, we started founding our brand. And our mission then and now is to always include a strong message and the highest sustainable standards that we can afford in our work.
Nowadays, for each collection we choose a topic that is currently relevant to society as an inspiration and that we want to shine a light on. We research a lot about this certain topic, individually learn and grow during this process and want to give the chosen topic a platform through our collection.
Working according to our values and with more sensibility turns fashion rather into an art form again then a consumer product, at least in our opinion. Especially for our customers, we want to create the opportunity to love fashion and to give it a soul.
